Kleine Besetzungen waren im 18. Jahrhundert oftmals der wirtschaftlichen Situation
geschuldet. Die Vorrede in Georg Philipp Telemanns „Harmonischem Gottesdienst“,
Leipzig 1725/6, belegt, wie sehr die hierin publizierten, mit lediglich einem
Soloinstrument versehenen Kantaten dem Bedürfnis der Kirchenmusiker in kleinen
Gemeinden entgegen kam. Die ausgesprochen sensible Textvertonung in den
ausgewählten drei Kantaten für Oboe, Singstimme und Basso continuo macht in der
Tat einen großen instrumentalen Apparat geradezu überflüssig.
Etwa 20 Jahre zuvor dürften die beiden Johann Sebastian Bach zugeschriebenen
Tastenmusikwerke, Toccata e-moll BWV 914 und Fantasia e Fuga a-moll BWV 561,
entstanden sein. Obwohl ihre Echtheit ungesichert ist, könnten sie gut das Bestreben
des noch jungen Musikers nach Anerkennung als Virtuose widerspiegeln.
Die beiden Partiten Johann Wilhelm Hertels, einem Enkelschüler Bachs, sind bereits
dem empfindsamen Stil verpflichtet und bilden mit ihren lieblichen Melodien einen
schönen Kontrast zu den schroff-virtuosen Werken Bachs.

The reason for small casts in music during the 18th century was often given by the economical situation. The introduction to Georg Philipp Telemann’s “harmonic service”, Leipzig 1725/6, proves, how much the here published cantatas, only provided with one solo instrument, were a concession following the necessity of church musicians in small parishes.
The definitely sensible text setting to music in the elected cantatas for oboe, voice and basso continuo makes in fact a great instrumental set-up nearly superfluous.
About 20 years before that time, the two music works for keys were written, ascribed to
Johann Sebastian Bach, Toccata e-moll BWV 914 and Fantasia e Fuga a-moll BWV 561.
Although its authenticity is not secured, they mirror perfectly the endeavour of that that
time young composer to reach recognition as virtuoso.
The two partitas from Johann Wilhelm Hertels, a 2nd generation student of Bach (the
student of a student of Bach), are already dedicated to the sensitive style and constitute with their lovely melodies a beautiful contrast to the curt –virtuoso works from J.S. Bach.
